Trial begins to challenge Wisconsin's anti-abortion law

UNDATED (WRN)  A federal judge will begin hearing arguments today in a challenge to a Wisconsin abortion law.

The law passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Walker last summer requires doctors performing abortions in Wisconsin to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Supporters of the law argue it’s intended to protect the safety of women, but opponents say it’s just another attempt to further restrict access to abortion by making it harder for clinics to stay open. Planned Parenthood has said, if the law were to go into effect, it would have to shut down a facility in Milwaukee, leaving only three abortion providers in the state.

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged the law shortly after it was passed last summer. An injunction has kept it from being enforced for much of the past year.
