Steele Walker came to Wausau as a highly touted prospect out of the University of Oklahoma. After a slow start he is showing why. The Woodchucks outfielder leads the Northwoods League in batting avg at .391 and he's homered four times (3 in the last 7 games) as the Chucks are playing better to start the 2nd half of the season. They also have had back to back good pitching performances from Jonah DiPoto and Scott Parker. They host Green Bay tonight at Athletic Park. The Woodchucks also have a couple of contestants in the Home Run Derby as part of All-Star week in Kenosha next week. Connor Heady and Steve Passatempo will be there…as will Marshfield grad Daulton Varsho who plays for the Eau Claire Express.
I don't usually pay much attention to the ESPYs but last night the Packers Hail Mary play to beat Detroit won the award for Play Of The Year. Craig Sager was recognized with the Jimmy V award as he battles cancer. I had forgotten that Sager was a young reporter in Atlanta covering Hank Aaron's home run chase of Babe Ruth. You can see him with his microphone in photos of Aaron after the event.
Packer President Mark Murphy says that the organization is interested in bringing the NFL draft to Green Bay. He's suggesting that 2019 might work as the new Titletown District will be up and running. One drawback is the lack of enough hotel rooms.
The Legion baseball season is winding down fast. We enter the final weekend of the regular season for varsity teams.
