I was a clueless freshman wandering the campus of UWSP in the fall of 1975. I did know one thing though…I wanted to be on the radio. Growing up listening to the radio convinced me that I wanted to do what they did. It didn't matter what…play tunes like the WRIG and WIFC djs…sports play by play like Merle Harmon and Eddie Doucette…it didnt matter…the radio studio seemed like a magical place. I sought out the student run radio station WWSP and one of the first people I ran into was Scott Krueger. He was an upperclassmen and the sports director at the station and immediatly welcomed me in. My radio start was in those first few months and the Big K (as he was known) was instrumental in my early training. I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today without the base of knowledge he provided and the chance to get behind the microphone for the first time. Well, today, by mayoral proclamation, is Scott Krueger Day in Stevens Point recognizing his 40 years of broadcasting sports in the city. He's been the voice of the Pointers, Spash, Pacelli and other area schools since 1977 and has done thousands of games. In a Scott Williams story from the Stevens Point Daily Journal, Scotty K remembers growing up listening to Eddie Doucette weave his magic during early Bucks broadcasts and he too was hooked. Like me, he had chances to move on to other places over the years, but wondered why he would consider it. He enjoyed what he was doing and was good at it. Why chase money to places that might not bring such satisfaction. There is going to be a reception in the Big K's honor today at the Atrium Room at SentryWorld from 4:30-6:30 which is open to anyone who has listened and enjoyed his work over the years. I would love to be there but have a baseball doubleheader to broadcast…something the Big K would surely understand.
There is a new movie coming telling the tale of the “Battle Of The Sexes” between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. It looks like it might be decent
Former Badgers Bart Houston and Dare Ogunbowale have signed NFL contracts after free agent tryouts. Ogunbowale signs with the Texans and Houston signs on with Pittsburgh after first trying out with Oakland. They join former teammates in the pros including Corey Clement with Philly and Sojurn Shelton with Arizona. Badgers who were drafted include Ryan Ramczyk (the Point native)with New Orleans, TJ Watt with the Steelers and of course, Vince Biegel in Green Bay.
Wily Peralta has been moved to the bullpen by Brewer manager Craig Counsell and although a replacement in the rotation hasnt been named, Junior Guerra is expected back soon. The Brewers won again last night as Matt Garza continues to pitch well surprising many, including me.
There are reports that Chris Cornell, former singer with Soundgarden and Audio Slave has died at 52. The death is said to be “sudden and unexpected”
Netflix did a study of the most popular show from the streaming service in each state and in Wisconsin its…….Fuller House??!!??. Come on, I thought we had better taste than that.
The news from DC is moving fast now…the assistant AG, without a heads up to either the White House or Speaker Ryan's office, names former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel investigating the Trump-Russia collusion mess. And while a special counsel doesnt have the same freedom as an independent counsel, Mueller is respected on both sides of the aisle so it will be tough for Sessions and Trump to discount or ignore his findings…Sheriff David Clarke, whose tenure in Milwaukee county has become a clown show littered with dead bodies in his jail and arrogance and obnoxiousness toward anyone who questions him, is taking a job with the Deparment of Homeland Security which begs the question…is taking a job in the Trump Adminstration right now like taking the last crew members job on the Titanic? I know Clarke is just fleeing Milwaukee before the voters fire him during the next election but it certainly won't end well anyway……The Washington Post reporting that White House staffers are sending out resumes and hiring job recruiters..they smell what's coming too.
