Sublime released “Santeria” off their 1996 self titled album. It reached #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks, #38 on the Adult Top 40 Tracks and #43 on the Hot 100. The song was actually released as a single in 1997 shortly after lead singer, Bradley Nowell, died of a heroin overdose.
The word “Santeria” means “way of the saints” in Spanish. The song is about using black magic to get his girl back. The jealous ex-boyfriend plans to take revenge on the man that stole his girlfriend, who he refers to as “Sancho.” He proposes violence, but decides to find a new girlfriend instead.
