Shawn Mullins wrote the song “Lullaby” about the glamorous but empty life in L.A. of a wealthy girl who is caught up in a life she enjoys and hates at the same time. It is inspired by a woman that Mullins met after a show in 1997. They had a few drinks and she told him her life story. He found it so interesting he wrote a song about it, “She kinda blew my mind with her crazy childhood and teenage years.” Not everything in the song refers to this girl's story, but she was the inspiration for the character in the song. Though the character's life took a darker turn.
The sound of the song was inspired by Joni Mitchell and Ani DiFranco.
