I am so happy that my hopes and dreams of being a news person didn’t come true. Nikki Montgomery..my morning partner..and I share that background in that we both at one point wanted to do that..gather news..put it on the air..if it’s news..we wanted to be the one to give it to you. But..whew..dodged a bullet with that one.
I grew up a political news junkie..loved watching the republican and democratic conventions..the whole process..and later in life I wondered what to do..I thought being a news reporter, anchor..anything in news was the route for me. I think it could have worked..I was passionate about it. But as you’ve all seen..the news world is broken..and I’m not sure it’ll ever get fixed. News is now divided into Factual reporting..and opinions. The news reporting structure for TV, radio, and print is set up to give you a little news and then discuss the crap out of it..24 hours a day. That’s the problem. Listeners and viewers are confused at the news machine. We take what works..sounds like the right info and we run with it. We talk about it, complain about it, take sides about it..but most of the time..we re-arrange the facts to fit what we believe..and that’s the broken part.
Not sure there is a fix for this trend..it’s taken a long time to get here. It’s the delivery system that is completely out of whack. We’d have to start from scratch to get everyone the same information..and somehow not let the talking heads discussing the news BE the news that people remember and talk on social media about.
After my quest to be a news person..things did work out. I grew fond of alarm clocks and waking up extra early..something that a lot of people didn’t want to do..I found my niche..morning radio..with somebody else to do what I used to hope and dream about..the news..on my morning radio show…
