MEDFORD, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails connect towns and cities all across northern Wisconsin.
But for a long time, a snowmobile club in Taylor County felt like there was a critical piece missing. “The local snowmobile club here called the We Whittlesey Whizzers had a vision in looking in looking at the Taylor County snowmobile system,” said Ann Dassow, acting district ranger for the Medford-Park Falls Ranger District of the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest.
For more than 30 years, members of the club worked with the National Forest to get access to the land to build the trail. “Through a lot of persistence and a lot of work, we determined a route and they started clearing it and establishing it this year,” said Dassow.
There’s still some work to be done on the trail this spring but the trail is now open to snowmobilers. The 13.5-mile trail will connect the Taylor County system near Mondeaux Flowage to a Price County system near Steve Creek Flowage. The clubs will maintain the trail.
“I think it’s a unique partnership the Forest Service has with the county and the snowmobile clubs, local snowmobile clubs,” said Dassow. “Without them, these opportunities, recreational opportunities, would not exist on the National Forest because we just don’t have the resources we need to maintain them.”
