“A Simple Favor” is about a widowed mommy blogger, Stephanie, who develops an unlikely friendship with a high class business woman, Emily, who disappears. Stephanie is dead set on finding her best friend and in doing so she develops a close relationship with Emily’s husband and son. When Emily turns up dead things really start to get crazy for Stephanie and she needs to figure out on her own exactly what’s going on.
This book has been compared to “Gone Girl” and rightly so in many ways…I actually read Gone Girl before this one and a smart person would have blogged the review for that one before this one, but hey, no one ever accused me of doing things that make sense. Both books are good, but I think I liked “Gone Girl” better.
I love the puzzle and how it is presented in this book. There are many curve balls I didn’t see coming, but some I predicted. I think that the book was way better at those curve balls than the movie was. This is one of the books that I couldn’t wait to get back to so I could find out what was coming next.
Darcey Bell is a smart writer. The story was well mapped out and I didn’t feel like there was a lot of fluff. Some other reviews complained about the lack of character development, but I could see how that would be by design. These characters are supposed to be filled with lies and deceit. You are supposed to discover them as the story unravels. Now, I will agree that these characters are mostly not relatable, but they’re still fun to read about. Heck, I hated all the characters in “Gone Girl,” but that’s a blog for another day.
If you’re looking for a fun read that probably won’t take you too long to get through (it’s only 304 pages). I recommend grabbing this one.
Compared to the movie the book is WAY better!
