WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — After almost two and a half years of planning, fundraising, and building, Wausau’s first dog park has an opening date.
Dog owners in Wausau can count down the days to the opening of the Wausau Dog Park as the City’s Dog Park Special Committee set its opening date at their Monday night meeting. Committee Chair Jamie Rice-Heckendorf says there will be a soft opening of the park a couple of weeks before its grand opening event.
“Soft opening like the weekend of the [May] 15th, that weekend opening it up. And then we’d be looking at June 5th for the grand opening. So that’s the weekend after the holiday weekend. I think that June 5th gives us more time to organize,”.
The Committee will officially finalize the tentative opening date at their May 4th meeting after getting a final turf update from the City’s grounds crew. Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Jamie Polley says turf establishment for the site is going well right now and should be on track for the June 5th opening date.
“The turf looks really good. I talked to our guys on Friday and they’re pretty confident that it’s coming in really good. They’re happy with what it looks like so far. They just need to see it green up to really get the best idea. But as we were talking we get some good weather and if we get some rain with this nice weather, that’s just going to help it even more,”.
Monday night the committee also approved the purchase of a 16×24 shelter for the park and discussed potential agility equipment pieces. The dog park will be located on 4th Street behind the Post Office in downtown Wausau.
