WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Chalk artists from as far away as Colorado have descended on downtown Wausau for the annual Chalkfest.
The event, canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, brought out as many as 500 artists this year. Many told WAOW it was nice to be back at the event
“It’s just great that everybody’s back and enjoying the 400 Block again,” Chalkfest committee member Ryan Kellenberger said.
In the Lambrecht family, Chalkfest is a yearly tradition.
“I look forward to it every year. It’s probably my favorite weekend of the year and it means a lot to me to do it with my dad and my brother,” said Ella Lambrecht.
Some families did create their own chalk art in their driveways last year instead of decorating the 400 Block
A total of 400 sidewalk squares are expected to be decorated by Sunday evening. Organizers recommend getting out Sunday night to see the works before the elements fade them away.
