In the radio biz…we always create our event calendar and add or subtract to that list…and man…it’s normally a HUGE list! But Covid changed all that. Some events we cover and help with went virtual or stopped all together. I for one never thought they would go away. A lot of times charity events make up a big portion of what that organizations needs to continue supporting the community. So when they decide to not do an event anymore..I wonder why? One of the big reasons is getting anyone to volunteer. Sad statement but people have moved on from helping so much. They discovered new things to be part of and so the event goes away…they have no choice.
One of the great events used to be the Polar Plunge..it raised money for Special Olympics..I did their P.A. announcements for like 20 years…it was a great run. They ran out of people to organize it properly..sponsors dropped off..so there it went…GONE! Another one we just talked about was Forrest’s Run in Weston…a super well oiled machine that hundreds of runners and walkers would attend. Lack of support staff in part made it so this is an event of the past. I will miss that event very much…it was such a great community thing to be part of in Weston, Wisconsin.
Now in 2022…there are some strong events still happening…some you haven’t seen “in person” for a while. Like “Hurray for Hollywood” for the Women’s Community. We’re hosting that on March 12th at the Hilton Garden Inn. The Never Forgotten Honor Flight 5K Run/Walk at Bull Falls Brewery is back..it’ll be in April and we’ll be supporting that one. Wings over Wausau is a combo of annual and new event things all in one weekend. That will be June 24-25 at the Wausau Municipal Airport. I’ll be emceeing that one.
So keep your eyes open. I have realized that some events have a shelf life. They were good when they were good. I’m encouraged to see the ones still hanging in there. It takes a lot of work to pull them off. It’s part of our DNA to help when we can!
