STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers says he’s disappointed in the news of a potential US Supreme Court ruling that could overturn Roe versus Wade.
“I am always one that has supported women’s reproductive rights,” said Evers. “I will do everything in my power to make sure the women of Wisconsin have the same rights that other women all across this world have.”
The Democrat, who is up for re-election this fall, says he’d like to see the decision codified into federal law. “[Senate Democrat] Chuck Schumer is talking about bringing this to the floor. The sooner the better obviously because of the nature of Congress. It might be difficult, but that’s the expectation.”
On Tuesday Attorney General Josh Kaul said should the case indeed be overturned and abortion rights reverted back to states, he would not instruct his staff to pursue alleged violations of Wisconsin’s 170-year-old ban on most abortions. Evers adds that Kaul is “in a position to make that decision, and I support him [on it].”
Evers was speaking to reporters in Stevens Point on Wednesday shortly after presenting tourism grants to groups in Central Wisconsin, including a $30,000 check to help with expenses associated with the 2023 US Senior Open, which will be held at SentryWorld Golf Club.
