STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — For a third consecutive year residents in Stevens Point have the chance to showcase their musical skills on an outdoor piano in the downtown area.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the city’s public piano was installed this week near the transit stage by Guus on Main. This year’s piano was painted by volunteers from UWSP and will be available for anyone to play at any time.
“This is such a cool project each year. People love this opportunity for public music,” said Mayor Wiza. “I’ve seen people of all ages playing and many more people just listening.”
The public piano project began in 2020. The piano is somewhat protected from the elements by a canopy, but Wiza notes that isn’t perfect protection and it will still be subject to some rain, humidity, and heat. The city welcomes anyone who would be willing to volunteer time to keep the instrument in tune until it is taken down this fall.
Wiza adds that the public piano is a tradition that the city would like to keep going. Anyone willing to donate an instrument for future years can contact the Mayor’s office at 715-346-1570.
