MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Lottery says don’t get caught in a scam as the Mega Millions jackpot tops the $1 billion mark for Friday.
Wisconsin Lottery Spokesperson Gary Kohn says the historic jackpot may mean longer lines at your local retailer, but that doesn’t mean you should try to find a shortcut to get your tickets.
“If you are choosing to play, buy your tickets from a licensed lottery retailer,” said Kohn. “If someone is offering you a ‘winning ticket’ or a ticket for cash, any other platform it is most certainly a scam and we do not want people to fall prey to that.”
That extended to the online world as well. While some states allow you to purchase plays through a mobile application, Wisconsin does not. “If you are being contacted by anyone [through] any platform; whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or text message that should immediately be a red flag and they should contact the lottery.”
Anyone with questions about what is or is not a legitimate lottery retailer can call the lottery player’s hotline directly at 1-608-266-7777.
Wisconsin also does not contact lottery winners directly. Anyone who claims to be contacting you from the lottery regarding a prize is also running a scam.
Kohn says players should also sign their tickets after verifying the purchase to prevent any confusion over who owns the play. Most importantly, he says only play what you are comfortable losing or what fits in your budget as well.
