WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – If you’ve speeding on Highway 51 or Interstate 39, you could be caught by a specially-equipt State Patrol airplane.
The aircraft is using VASCAR technology. It’s a timing device in the plane that can track the speed of objects on the ground below. The plane then radios patrol cars on to initiate traffic stops.
The State Patrol says there will be air enforcement in Marathon County this Saturday. A task force of local police departments and the Marathon County Sheriffs Department has been taking part in a crackdown on speeders since June. That effort will continue through the end of August. More than 500 citations have been handed out so far.
There will also be airborne speed enforcement this weekend in Dane, St. Croix and Waukesha counties.
