“All Good People Here” is the debut novel from the host of the #1 true crime podcast Crime Junkie, Ashley Flowers.
Journalist Margot Davies returns to her hometown to care for her uncle who is suffering from dementia. She begins to uncover so many secrets surrounding the death of her childhood friend and neighbor which still haunts the town 25 years later. January Jacobs was murdered at 6 years old and discovered in a ditch the following morning and her murderer was never found. Now that another young girl in a neighboring town has been kidnapped and murdered in a town only 8 short miles away, Margot can’t help but connect the two cases.
Margot’s editor thinks she’s reaching and won’t print her story. Margot’s journalistic instincts won’t let her walk away from the story even though she’s lost her job. She interviews people around town, starts looking into possible suspects, digs deeper into the family and befriends a police officer to find the truth.
First let me say that I really enjoyed this book. The writing is good, the story is intriguing and it has enough twists that you don’t want to put it down. The book is written from the point of view of two different characters in two different times, Margot in 2019 and Krissy in 1994 and sometimes 1987. Sometimes when books are written this way it is hard to see a connection right away or a link between the two story lines, but in this case the two points of view intertwine so well and the characters are so well developed it all flows together beautifully right from the start.
I often find myself figuring out the mystery early on in most books and movies, but this book was fantastically unpredictable. I loved every second of it. While the ending surprised me it also left my mind reeling. I give this book a 5 out of 5. I can’t wait to see what Ashley Flowers gives us in the future.
