WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Library Board of Trustees has voted to keep two books in the juvenile section of the collection despite a challenge from some in the community.
Making a Baby by Rachel Greener and You be You! The Kids Guide to Gender, Sexuality, and Family by Jonathan Branfman will both remain where they are currently placed.
The board took about 30 minutes of public comment before Monday’s vote. Most of those who spoke were against having the books placed in the youth section, with one person recommending that the library move them to the adult section or make them available upon request.
Both books were investigated by an independent board, which compiled dozens of pages of information on each including reviews and what other libraries have done with the titles.
Both motions passed on a unanimous voice vote. Many in the crowd expressed displeasure with the decision, including one person who got up and left saying he needed to get out of the meeting otherwise he would throw up.
Library Director Leah Giordano was not available for comment immediately following Monday’s meeting.
