WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Woodchucks baseball organization is proposing adding a college womens softball franchise to play at Wausau’s Athletic Park.
The softball team would play games when the Woodchucks were out of town and their season would from late May to mid August. The first season is proposed to be in 2024.
Woodchucks owner Mark McDonald is also proposing to install artificial turf to the infield at Athletic Park. The thinking behind that is for the field to be available earlier in the year, more games could be played on the field including high school & American Legion games, and there would be fewer rainouts with savings on daily maintenance as well.
The proposal says the turf project would start at the end of the 2023 Woodchucks season.
Both proposals will go before the Wausau Economic Development Committee on December 6th.
