RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU) A master plan for Rib Mountain State Park has been approved by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board.
The WNRB met on December 14th in Madison.
New downhill ski runs are a part of the plan.
The park will also add new climbing areas and a network of hiking and mountain biking trails. One of the new trails will circle the park’s perimeter. Camping will also be re-introduced to the park. A new nature center will be constructed.
The update is a revision to the 2005 Master Plan for the park after a three year review. Four public hearings were held. More than 6,000 public comments were received.
There was some opposition to expanding the ski area. The plan includes two new areas for skiing, including a new lift and ski trails to the east of the existing Cupid Lift and a new lift and ski trails to the west of the Dasher Lift. The skiing area will expand by about 128 acres. The owners of the Granite Peak Ski Area said that more family-friendly ski areas were necessary for their long-term viability.
