EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The Northland Pines School District has announced that they will cancel their varsity football season for next fall.
WAOW TV reports the decision was made due to low numbers, and a lack of experience in the players that are planning to play for the upcoming season. The school does plan to play a full JV schedule with an eye toward returning to the varsity circuit in ’24.
“We want the best for our kids, by no means was this a decision that was made overnight,” said Josh Tilley, the school’s activities director.
Tilley adds that the numbers within the football program have stayed around the same number overall, but the potential of fielding a mostly young roster put them in a tough spot. That includes just three returning Seniors.
Eagle River isn’t the only area school that’s called off a varsity season this year. White River canceled the remainder of their varsity girls’ basketball season due to low numbers. Loyal and Greenwood will also be forming a football co-op next year.
