“What Lies Beneath: A Laura Chambers Novel” by J.G. Hetherton is a step up from his last Laura Chambers novel “Last Girl Gone,” but you really shouldn’t skip that one because Laura references things that happened in the first book and it’s helpful to know the details to truly understand what Laura is going through.
Laura has a terrible relationship with the police in her small North Carolina town. Her job as a reporter already had her on their enemies list, but after what happened to one of their own who tried to help her get her last big story they really hated her. The thing is she is connected to their latest murder victim so they have no choice but to bring her in and work with her.
Laura received a phone call from the victim, but she didn’t answer so all she had was a mystery number and a silent voicemail. The victim was unrecognizable after being hit by a truck so how was she to know how they were connected. Laura needs to figure it out, but she’ll be damned if she works with these cops.
On her path to figuring out who this mystery woman is Laura learns lots of disturbing secrets about the town she grew up in and her own family.
Wisconsin born J.G. Hetherton does a great job not giving too much away and not drowning us in the details. I highly recommend this book, it’s much better than the first Laura Chambers novel. I’d give it a 4.5/5. When you think you’ve got your answers you get turned in a new direction. I really enjoy books like that.
