“Apples Never Fall” by Liane Moriarty is a book about sibling rivalry, a complicated marriage, a mystery and the story of the hunt for a missing person. I thought it was brilliant.
Moriarty’s books always seem to have a lot of main characters, but she does a good job managing them and getting you to connect with them.
In “Apples Never Fall” we meet 4 siblings that are all very different from one another and the thing that keeps them connected is their mother, Joy. When Joy goes missing and the police think their father, Stan murdered her the kids band together to try to figure out what happened to her. They all agree that there are certain things they shouldn’t tell the police because it might make their father appear guilty, but the police know they’re hiding something. They each have their own riveting stories to tell and their own secrets, but their loyalty to their family is the same.
I found the characters in this book to be so real and relatable. I saw my own family at times. The reality of Joy and Stan’s marriage and their love for one another was authentic. Joy’s resentment and love of her family are perfectly opposing concepts and I just loved it.
Liane Moriarty has been hit and miss for me, but “Apples Never Fall” is a hit for sure. I would give it a rating of 4.5 out of 5. I think you should give this a read. I bet it will make you think of your own adult siblings and your relationship with your parents and their relationship with each other.
