“Shelter In Place” by Nora Roberts throws us into a tragedy right off the bat. We are introduced to three teenage girls going to the movies at the Downeast Mall in Portland, Maine and a teenage boy, Reed, on break from his job at the restaurant flirting with the girl at the sunglasses kiosk in the mall concourse.
One of the teenage girls, Simone, excuses herself to the restroom during the movie. Reed leaves the sunglasses kiosk to meet up with is friend that manages the gaming store. When both Simone and Reed leave their locations they hear gunshots and quickly learn that a mass shooting is taking place. Simone goes back into the bathroom to hide and calls 911. Reed sees a small child without his mother scoops him up and hides in the sunglasses hut where he discovers the girl he was flirting with shot and killed.
Officers arrived the the whole thing was over in a matter of minutes, but it wasn’t really over. Reed and Simone are among the survivors who are haunted by the events of that night. Years later survivors of the Downeast Mall shooting are turning up dead. The only thing that these people have in common is that they were there that night and they profited somehow from the incident. Eventually Reed, who is now a police officer, realizes that there is a serial killer taking these people out and he is on the list.
When Reed takes a job as the chief of police of Tranquility Island, Maine he finds himself falling for the enchanting Simone. He is even more driven to find the murder to keep Simone safe.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will keep turning pages waiting for the next move. The love story unfolding between Reed and Simone nothing but a wonderful addition to the suspense and thrill and the motivation for Reed to find the killer. I give this book a 5/5.
