“The Mistake” by K.L. Slater is about a woman named Rose who is simply surviving after losing her whole family. The closest person to family she has left is her next door neighbor, an elderly man that was there for her and her parents more than anyone after her little brother was killed. When Rose uncovers secrets in his house that makes her question the guilt of the man behind bars for her brother’s murder her whole world starts to crumble. She needs to relive that horrible time in her life to try to figure out the truth.
There are some major triggers in this book. Abuse, sexual assault, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, heavy topics that you need to be prepared for. If you can get through those things the book is pretty good. I thought the twist was fantastic, I never saw it coming. I loved the growth in Rose’s character and the strength she showed at the end.
It was a really quick 318 pages. I was thinking about it even when I didn’t have the book in hand so I was able to flip through it rather quickly. I like those kinds of books where you are so invested you think about it at random times trying to piece together the puzzle.
If you’re looking for a good spring break read or one to keep you occupied while you’re waiting in the school pickup line (that’s when I do most of my reading) this is a good one to pick up. I rate this a 4/5.
