“The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave was featured in Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club so it is no surprise that it has become a show…a TV miniseries on Apple TV+ to be specific.
Hannah, her husband Owen and Owen’s teenage daughter Bailey live in Sausalito, California. Hannah is a wood turner who designs and sells furniture to wealthy clients and Owen works for a tech company that has been accused of embezzlement. Just before the FBI arrests the owner of the company, Owen disappears leaving Hannah a note that simply says, “Protect her.”
When Hannah is approached by a U.S. Marshal from Texas she realizes there is more to the story than the FBI knows and she needs to do some digging of her own before she trusts anyone. Hannah and Bailey need to find out what secrets Owen has been keeping and protect themselves in the process.
While I liked this book I felt like it could have been better. It could have included much more danger and been a lot more exciting. It would have been better to have some chapters from Owen’s perspective or even the U.S. Marshal’s. Hannah is pretty much just doing research and that’s not all that exciting for readers.
I’m going to nitpick here for a second and point out that I was a little annoyed by all the times the author wrote “he said” and “she said” throughout a written conversation. It’s not necessary, we can tell who is saying what in a two person conversation. Also, there are more ways to identify who is saying something.
Overall, I would give this book a 3 out of 5. I think if a sequel came out from Owen’s perspective I’d read it. I don’t have Apple TV+ so I won’t be watching it, but if you do I’d love to hear what you think.
