WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — A judge in Wood County denied a motion to suppress evidence in the case against a former clerk accused of embezzling fines from Marshfield Municipal Court.
Susan Carlson had claimed that some of the information used against her was gained through an illegal search of her home. But court records show that Special Agent Loreen Glaman, who investigated the incident for the city, was only in Carlson’s home to interview her and did not search the property.
The judge concluded that there was sufficient evidence to prove that consent was given for the interview in the home, and subsequently rejected the motion.
Carlson is suspected of pocketing payments that were supposed to go to the city. The missing funds were discovered when the new Clerk of Courts took over following Carlson’s retirement in early 2021, and an investigation was immediately opened.
The 69-year-old faces three counts of theft in a business setting of more than $10,000. Estimates show she may have taken up to $70,000 over several years.
The case now moves to a final pre-trial conference on June 9th. No trial date has been set.
