MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — With Minnesota the latest state to allow recreational cannabis, a Wisconsin lawmaker says the state is missing out.
“Minnesota officially becomes the 23rd state to legalize cannabis for responsible adult usage, which makes Wisconsin, even more, an island of prohibition,” said State Senator Melissa Agard.
The Madison Democrat has been a long-time supporter of marijuana legalization in Wisconsin.
Minnesota’s first dispensary is already open, with more likely to follow.
“We’re losing out on tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue to the states and likely hundreds of millions of dollars in economic stimulus,” said Agard.
MMJ legislation may become public “later in the summer,” according to state assembly speaker Robin Vos, who commented at a luncheon back in June, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
Vos stated at the luncheon that a “unique to Wisconsin” MMJ proposal is in the works without going into further detail.
A bill allowing strictly regulated medical marijuana is reportedly in the works in the Wisconsin legislature.
