WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Plans for a new proposed riverside concert venue might be at a standstill.
The venue, set to be called The River, would be located around Athletic Park, with a projected capacity of 3,500 people. Numbers like these have the potential to bring in revenue capable of competing with top venues in the country.
But city leaders aren’t completely sold on the idea, requesting a feasibility study to be completed before they commit to any public investment for the project. “And we’ve already heard from people who are in the industry how sourcing and booking talent is getting to be an ongoing struggle in this size of a market so we want projected independent numbers,” said Alderperson Lisa Rasmussen.
Alders decided against using public funds to pay for that study. Developers VY Properties will have to foot the entire bill themselves.

The group, which includes Joe Ellis and Anna Herman, laid out an aggressive timeline for the project. Original plans called for construction to begin this fall with the first events held sometime next year. But thus far the group has not identified land for the venue.
