WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A former substitute teacher in Central Wisconsin is going to trial for charges of sexual assault stemming from inappropriate contact with a person under 13.
Zachary Robins is accused of touching a female student through a hole in the back of her top. He said the act was meant as a joke but later regretted it.
He was immediately terminated after the charges against him were brought forward.
According to the complaint, another student accused him of touching her on her backside.
The trial begins Tuesday at 9 AM and is scheduled to wrap no later than Thursday. This is now the 4th attempt at a trial for the charges, which were originally filed in 2019. The most recent attempt at a trial was scheduled for last February but was pushed back due to weather.
The 28-year-old had been hired through a substitute staffing service to work in local districts. According to the service, he passed all of their background checks and other requirements before being hired.
Dr. Keith Hilts, the Wausau School District’s superintendent, reported that Robins had filled in for nine schools in 2019 for a total of 10 full days and seven half days.
