STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Stevens Point Fire Department will conduct a live burn training exercise on a single-family home this weekend.
The home will be burned to allow the fire department to get real-world experience regarding fire behavior, suppression techniques, search and rescue, and other response-related disciplines. Officials add that training in an acquired structure is “second to non” compared to training in a simulated environment such as a fire training facility.
Conducting a live burn exercise involves permitting from multiple agencies including the Wisconsin DNR. Factors such as asbestos abatement were also considered before final approval.
Measures will also be taken to protect the public and other nearby structures.
This is the third time this year that the Stevens Point Fire Department has used an abandoned home for live fire training. Other burns were conducted in April on Second Street North and in August on Hoover Road.
The structure is located at 5278 Highway HH. The Fire Department says residents should be aware of smoke coming from the area and reduced visibility on nearby roads.
