RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU) A lack of natural snowfall will lead to a late opening at Granite Peak Ski Area. They are usually open for Thanksgiving weekend. An opening day hasn’t been announced yet.
Snowmaking operations began in mid-November. The goal is to have between 1 and 2-feet of snow cover before the trails can be used.
Temperatures must be between 20 and 25 degrees for the snow guns to create snow. Temperatures were above that level for most of early and mid-November. The ski area advised on November 10 that a later-than-usual opening was likely this year.
Snowmaking operations involve between 50 and 75 machines, on for 12-hour shifts.
Temperatures are expected to be much colder for early December, but there is no significant natural snow in the short-term forecast.
If the weather remains cold enough, the skiing season at Granite Peak could begin in the next week or two. Skiiers can call 715) 845-2846 or sign up for updates at info@granitepeak.com
