I did not sleep well last night. And by “not well,” I mean I spent 7 hours and 48 minutes in bed but only managed 6 hours and 13 minutes of restless, broken sleep. I woke up almost every hour, and around 2 a.m. my brain decided it was a great time to be fully awake. My average overnight heart rate was 78—which tells you everything you need to know about how stressed I was about going back to work after more than a week off.
Unsurprisingly, I was exhausted all day.
Work was nonstop, so I skipped lunch entirely. I had a protein shake around 10 a.m., then finally grabbed a yogurt with peanut butter and granola around 3 p.m. Fueling? Questionable. Mood? Even more questionable. I’ll be honest—I was cranky. Very cranky. (This picture pretty much sums it up.)
The last thing I wanted to do was work out. But my 14-year-old daughter really wanted to go, so I went—reluctantly. Of course, the gym was packed thanks to the New Year’s resolution crowd. We ended up heading upstairs just to find two treadmills next to each other. We walked for 20 minutes, and by the end of it… I was actually glad we went.
When we finished, my mood had noticeably improved, and I had just enough extra energy to get through the rest of the evening. It would’ve been so easy to say, “I’m too tired, too hungry, and too cranky.” But I didn’t—and I’m grateful my daughter nudged me out the door anyway.
Sometimes the workout you don’t want to do is the one you need most.
