Since the last book I reviewed for you was Gillian Flynn’s novel “Gone Girl” I figured why not give you a review on Gillian Flynn’s first novel. I read this one a while ago, quite some time before I read “Gone Girl” so I am digging deep into my memory banks for “Sharp Objects.”
I think “Sharp Objects” is better than “Gone Girl” you can fight me on that if you want to. The writing is simple yet strong and it takes you on a journey. The narrator of the story is raw and human not some estranged voice telling you the story from a pedestal.
Camille is a reporter who is given a disturbing assignment that sends her back to her hometown to investigate the murders of young girls. This assignment reconnects her with her mother, Adora, and her 13 year old half-sister, Amma, and the memory of her younger sister, Marian, that died from a mysterious illness when Camille was young and before Amma was born. While investigating the murders she feels connected to them in a strange way and they bring back terrifying memories.
This is an easy read if you’re okay with the dark path it leads you down. This book haunted me. It was one I had to read every chance I got because I couldn’t get it out of my head.
In 2018, “Sharp Objects” was turned into an HBO miniseries starring Amy Adams as Camille. It is available on HBO Max. I never watched it so I can’t compare the miniseries to the book for you, but I may have to check it out now that I know it’s available on HBO Max.
