WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Hatley man has been sentenced for a drunk driving accident that killed his friend, 21-year-old Bryce Giles.
Heith Gureski will spend 10 years in the Wisconsin prison system including five years of actual incarceration and five years of extended supervision.
The sentence also includes a five-year driver’s license revocation and all assessment/treatment/counseling as deemed necessary. He will also pay court costs and submit a DNA sample.
Authorities say Gureski was behind the wheel when he and Giles left a Town of Weston tavern at a high rate of speed. Police were later called to the intersection of County Road J and Roble Lane for a report of a rollover crash. That’s where they found Giles dead, while Gureski suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
He told police he couldn’t remember how many drinks he had that night and claimed he was going 55 MPH when the vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree.
The accident occurred in November of 2020. Gureski has been in jail while awaiting trial and sentencing and will be given credit for nearly 240 days already served.
