Elections have consequences…Donald Trump with another “wag the dog” moment as he launches cruise missles into Syria. Look, we all know Assad is a bastard and has killed his own people for years and yet when President Obama wanted to do something about it years ago the Republican led Congress wouldnt let him and Trump publically called for him to stay out. Trump says he changes his mind after seeing the carnage of the latest chemical attack and that may be but the launch of the missles certainly doesnt back up his “America First” mantra. Assad killing his own people, as odius as it is, certainly isnt exactly a 'clear and present danger” to us. I'm of the mind that we protect the innocent in the world if we can regardless if our interests are involved. We are one if not the only “superpower”left in the world. We didn't in Rwanda and some other hot-spots around the globe. But it's more than just lobbing some missiles on some government targets. Will the President be more welcoming of civilian refugees trying to escape the carnage? Will he stop trying to demonize everyone who doesn't “look” like us? It seems this President's foreign policy is formed by watching television. He believes the yahoos at Fox News instead of his own intelligence agencies. The cynic in me says this is a knee-jerk reaction to what he saw on tv reports of the atrocity and an action that will try and deflect the news-cycle away from the Russian mess, his golf weekends at Mar-A-Lago and the in-fighting in his White House. As Dan Rather put it yesterday…it's easy to lob missiles on a country like Syria…what comes next will be much harder.
It also take the focus off Trump's attempt to strong-arm Twitter to find one of his harshest critics on the social media site. He has sent Homeland Security agents after Twitter to try and find out the identity of a person who uses the @alt-uscis handle and criticizes the President and his policies. Twitter is fighting off the free-speech intrusion for now and it's hard to imagine a court that would be ok with this. This is just another example of a thin-skinned, impetuous child throwing a tantrum when he feels impunged. And the behavior seems to be escalating.
To lighten things up:
The Cubs come to Milwaukee starting tonight. Let's see if the Brewers hitters can cut down on the strikeouts and put some runs on the board.
Our sister station WDEZ is having a fundraising event tonight at Dale's Weston Lanes for the families of the shooting victims in Weston. Music, food and more!
The annual Rythmn & Brews event for the Alzheimers Association is tonight at the CW Convention Center at Cedar Creek. Samples dozens of tasty beverages and listen to some good Blues music.
I'll be starting another season of high school baseball broadcasting today as the Wausau East Lumberjacks open the season at Witt/Birn. It starts at 4:30 on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.
The laugh was everything for Don Rickles. He didnt care who he insulted with his act as long as the audience laughed. And it was an act. He was according to his friends a 'kind and sensitive” human being. Rickles died this week at the age of 90. The roster of 1960's entertainment icons continues to get smaller. Here is a sample of his stuff: Some of his stuff was a pushing the envelope and today would be viewed as problematic but in the 60's….
