For years, Wisconsin was a golf backwater. Yeah, we had the Greater Milwaukee Open but with dates usually right before the British Open it never attracted a first-rate field. But now it seems Wisconsin has become a player…literally. The latest success is the Steve Stricker led Champions Tour event from this past weekend. Big crowds came out to the sparkling gem that is University Ridge in Verona to watch the senior guys play. With a bunch of destination golf courses either already open or coming soon the golf boom in the state isn't going anywhere. The US Open will be here next year at Erin Hills and the Ryder Cup is coming soon too. You can also expect more big events coming to the courses along Lake Michigan and for the recreational player the ability to play championship courses without ever leaving home as never been greater. It's good to be a golfer in Wisconsin these days.
Spent the weekend in Beloit and Janesville for Legion baseball. Riverside Park (where the baseball field is located) in Janesville is probably the best city park I've ever visited in Wisconsin. It's a huge park stretching along the banks of the Rock River. Century old oaks and maples tower over the water. The park includes almost everything a person or family could be looking for. Fishing, boating, splash pad and playgrounds, picnic areas, lots of water birds, even a golf course. It really is a gem.
Wausau Post 10 split it's four games down south, beating Janesville and Rockford Illinois and dropping a pair with Beloit. We will get another shot at Beloit this weekend at the annual Firecracker Tournament in Stevens Point. The other games this week include hosting Plover on Tuesday night at Athletic Park and traveling to Merrill on Thursday.
The Woodchucks host Wisconsin Rapids in a doubleheader tonight at Athletic Park. I'll be in the booth with Nate Gatter for tonight's broadcasts beginning at 5:20.
