I spent the weekend with some high school friends in the Northwoods for the 4th year in a row. It started as a chance to help a friend deal with her grief…and still does that I hope…but it has become something more for all of us. We ate, drank, joked, laughed and re-charged. It's always a joy to spend time with these folks in an atmosphere of friendly camaraderie even though most of us only see each other once or twice a year. No politics…no arguing over differences…no judgements…it's an enviable chunk of my life…may it last for many more years.
Things we learned this year:
* It's difficult to fit canoes on a trailer designed for kayaks
* it's never too old to aquire a new nickname, Suzy Williamson will forever be known as McGyver as she seemed to have whatever item we needed in her bottomless go bag.
* no matter how many Utz cheese balls you eat out of the giant container from Sam's Club…it never seems to get emptier.
* drinking Red Eye Mai Bock on a boat in the sun at 11am is definitely an OK activity.
* an all day boat ride needs more bathroom breaks these days
* music sounds better with a pool cue in your hand.
* George Jones “The Race Is On” blasting at 6am is an effective alarm clock.
* Fitbits can be addictive, walking halls of the hotel at midnight to get in your steps because bears have been spotted walking the street of Boulder Junction.
* seeing a full moon over water is an experience to be savored.
* next year can't come soon enough
It's postseason time for high school spring sports. The Track regionals were yesterday and a number of athletes moved on. Wausau East had a good day on the tennis court. Sawyer Schlindwein and Luke Bailey advanced in singles while the doubles teams of Keacha Chang/Isaac Stine & Stephen Martell/Mario Duwe advanced in doubles. The Wausau West tennis team advanced David & Jon Richetto adavnced in singles while the doubles team of Ben Reich/Ben Nichols moved on. The softball regionals get under way today and tomorrow.
I'll have baseball tonight, weather permitting as East travels to Marshfield for a 5pm game, live on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.
I found out a little more about the Wausau East/Merrill hockey co-op for the coming year. It will be coached by the current Merrill & East coaches…will be administered out of the Merrill AD and will use the in place Merrill schedule plus the Marathon Cup. East would not have had enough players for a varsity program this coming season. the Wisconsin Valley Conference, both schools and the WIAA agreed on the co-op plan.
Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan who turns 75 today & Rosanne Cash who is 61
Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod)
Shine-Joni Mitchell (2007)Title track from her last studio album. the LP is full of Mitchell musings on love, life, death and our abuse of the planet. The other stuff won't mean much if we don't start fixing the last one a little faster.
