It was written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead and Ozzy's guitarist Zakk Wylde, Ozzy said it is about his wife Sharon. “Mama” is his nickname for his wife and when approaching the end of a tour he would often end phone conversations with Sharon saying “Mama, I'm coming home.”

Wylde said the guitar solo in this song is so easy, he could play it in his sleep. He stated once that some of his favorite songs are simple structurally.
“Mama, I'm Coming Home” is Ozzy's only solo Top 40 hit, his only other was his duet with Lita Ford “Close My Eyes Forever.”
