Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain wrote “All Apologies” and dedicated it to his wife, Courtney Love and daughter, Francis Bean. He said it wasn't the lyric that made him think of them, but the mood of the song, “peaceful, happy, comfort – just happy happiness.”
Cobain thought the vocals and bass were too “mushy” a hard contrast to the other songs on the album. Krist Noveselic thought it would be a great discovery when people listened to the album, calling it a “gateway” to the more abrasive songs on the album. The song was #1 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Songs chart and #4 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Nirvana recorded the song for the album
MTV Unplugged in New York
in November 1993, but it wasn't released until November 1994, 7 months after Cobain's death.

Bobcat Goldthwait opened some shows for Nirvana on the

tour. While on tour he had some suggestions on the music video. One of his ideas was Cobain dressing as Lee Harvey Oswald and Dave Grohl or Noveselic dressing as John F. Kennedy and Cobain throwing a pie at the back of their head. No official music video was ever created for the song.
