WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office says at least three residents have lost over $80,000 to scammers in the last week.
Public Information Officer Sarah Severson says while it may be the same old playbook, what’s different this time is the money is being handed over in person, instead of being lost to gift cards or wire transfers.
“[It starts with] a phone call,” says Severson. “Someone stating that a grandchild involved in a car crash, and that grandchild is being held in jail and needed bond money. These individuals called asking for that money and later showed up at the victim’s home in person to collect.”
Severson says with any unsolicited request for money your best method of protection remains the same- double-check the story. “Call a family member, call a friend- just make sure you verify those facts before you release any financial resources.”
She also suggests setting up a family password or phrase to use in the event of an emergency, which can help verify that someone is actually in trouble. No password, no money.
At least one person has been arrested in connection with the investigation, and Severson says anyone who’s a victim of this scam should contact their local law enforcement agency or the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office at 715-261-1200.
