WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Former Marshfield Municipal Clerk of Courts Susan Carlson returned to court on Thursday on charges that she stole thousands of dollars in citation payments from the city’s coffers.
Carlson entered a not guilty plea to three counts of theft of more than $10,000 in a business setting.
She’s accused of falsifying records and pocketing the cash for herself instead of turning it over to the city’s finance department. The alleged scheme was discovered after her retirement when the new Clerk discovered irregularities with the city’s books.
It’s believed that the city may have lost as much as $70,000, which City Administrator Steve Barg has previously said could be covered by insurance.
Court records show all three charges have also been amended. She returns to court on September 9th for a status conference.
