“It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover
Published: August 2, 2016 by Simon and Schuster
Genres: Romance novel, Fiction, Contemporary romance
Everyone has been talking about this author, Colleen Hoover, I hadn’t read any of her books and to be honest I am not a fan of romance novels as you may have deduced from reading my other book reviews. Brace yourself for an unpopular opinion, there is more that I don’t like about this book than its genre. Colleen Hoover’s writing is simple and juvenile. I understand that in “It Ends With Us” there are a lot of journal entries the main character, Lily, is reading written by her younger self, and if it were only in these “Ellen” journals that I felt that way I’d give it a pass, but that is not the case. The entire book is written with the lowest common denominator in mind. What I mean by that is that this book gives you what the author thinks you want, sex, jealousy, and drama without giving you anything you need to feel it.
Lily is a young woman who meets a handsome man named Ryle, on the roof of a fancy apartment building. They have a lovely evening together and they part ways only to find each other months later by accident. Who couldn’t see that coming? After his sister starts working for Lily they are in each others lives whether they like it or not. SURPRISE! The guy who said he didn’t want a relationship can’t stop thinking of Lily and BAM! They are a thing. But wait! Lily’s first love miraculously appears and oh no drama ensues. Ryle is insanely jealous things start going downhill for Ryle and Lily and she needs to make a choice.
Everything that happens in this book, the good, bad and the ugly were all super predictable. How she reacted was predictable. I know this isn’t a mystery, but I just felt like it could’ve been organized differently to surprise us a little at times.
“It Ends With Us” spent 80 weeks at #1 on the best seller list so I know I am in the minority here, but I felt like this book was a waste of time and I won’t be diving into the sequel.
Is there a different Colleen Hoover book I should read to maybe change my mind about her?
