WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Pour one out tonight for one of Wausau’s downtown parking ramps.
The McClellan Street Ramp has officially been taken out of service and now awaits the wrecking ball sometime next year. City leaders voted to close the ramp earlier this spring, with an effective date of June 1st.
Those in the city’s engineering department had expressed concerns about the condition of the ramp, noting that it would take nearly $325,000 to keep the ramp functional for another two years. Maintenance to extend the ramp’s life by one year was also estimated in the six-figure range.
Those who had permits to park in the ramp can continue to park either in the Jefferson Street Ramp, Lot 20, or Lot 14 immediately. No action is required to transfer your permits for those areas.
The city will consider demolishing the ramp as part of the 2024 budget process. It’s unclear if the land will be redeveloped or reserved for surface parking
