WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — One of the greatest offensive lineman in pro football history has died. Wausau native Jim Otto died Sunday night in Las Vegas at the age of 86.
Otto grew up in Wausau and played at then Wausau High School, graduating in 1956. He played college football at the University of Miami before starting a long career with the Oakland Raiders.
He played 15 years for the Raiders, never missing a game due to injury. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, the first year he was eligible. He was also elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall-Of-Fame in 1998.
He reportedly had 74 operations for various football related aliments including 28 knee operations. He eventually had to have one of his legs amputated.
