WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The ‘All-Stars Under the Stars’ event had a unique twist as Mayor Doug Diny swore in new military recruits. Locals attended not only for the Journey cover band, Separate Ways, but also to witness the honorable ceremony.
Military recruiters emphasized the challenging journey to military service. However, they noted that it’s a task anyone can accomplish.
“One of the most important reasons we are here today is to connect with the community,” said Matthew Jones, staff sergeant and Army recruiter. “We want to show that the military isn’t isolated from regular everyday people, but the military is made up of everyday regular people. It’s a multicultural, multi-beliefs organization. We come from all over the world and every different background.”
The event serves as a fundraiser for the Man of Honor Society. So when Mayor Doug Diny was asked if he would orchestrate the swearing in ceremony, they thought this event would be the perfect place to do it.
“I think this is an important event for the public to see,” said Diny. “I served, I have two kids in the military, so I’m intimately familiar with military service but I think a lot of people aren’t… and I hope this spurs more people to take a look at it and explore it as an option, to serve their country.”
The mayor also highlighted the opportunity to honor the veterans from the Wausau American Legion Post 10, other Veterans who may have attended as well as the future of the military.
