SCHKEUDITZ, Germany, Oct 18 (Reuters) – German police said on Sunday that they were investigating a breach at the Leipzig/Halle airport after a vehicle appeared to drive through a fence, in a second security lapse this year.
• In August, investigators discovered an explosive-laden drone near a runway at the airport, an event that German officials later said Russia was responsible for. Russia has denied the allegations.
• One runway has been closed, but passenger traffic was running as normal on Sunday, an airport spokesperson said.
• German police first responded to the suspected breach late on Saturday evening.
• Leipzig police earlier said they hadn’t found suspicious objects or unauthorized personnel but would be carrying out further searches.
• Police at the scene on Sunday were looking for clues in the area around a large break in the chain-link and barbed-wire fence.
• Germany ordered a series of measures in response to August’s attempted drone attack, including the closure of a consulate and a Russian cultural centre in Berlin.
• German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Saturday addressed security issues when speaking to party members. “The threat for us all is very real,” he said.
