Window film could help deter armed aggressors at schools, business, government buildings

MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) -  A thin, strong film for windows and doors may help improve safety at schools, businesses, and government facilities. Dick Peterson of Mosinee says a window and door treatment designed to prevent flying glass during an explosion can be used to prevent access by an active shooter.  "It's a bomb blast mitigation film.  What it can do is after shooting the glass out, it's going to hold the glass together and its going to keep somebody from penetrating the glass opening."

The film does not make the door or window bulletproof, but it contains most of the glas chards and makes the opening very difficult to access.

Peterson’s daughter lives in Newtown, Connecticut, and called him during the Sandy Hook School shootings. Based on news reports, Peterson believes treating windows with this film could have kept the shooter outside of the school building.  "The mentioned that the perpetrator shot the sidelight out of the glass, the glass next to the door because the door was locked, and he just walked in and he started shooting.  Well, with this 8 millimeter or 6 millimeter film, its going to keep the person from going in, and he's going to hit it and kick it and everything else after shooting it, and he's not going to break it and break through"

The two types of protective window film can be applied to existing doors and windows much cheaper than upgrading to security glass.

Peterson says if you can slow down the perpetrator, chances are they will give up.  "Most of the time, these people have a psychiatric problem, and they cannot stand resistance, so once they try and break in a little bit, they're going to give up and leave."

The bomb blast mitigation films are available to professional installers all over the country. Peterson’s company, Window Enhancements LLC of Mosinee is demonstrating the product for a group of school and law enforcement officials Wednesday morning.

Again, the protective film does not make doors and windows bulletproof, but it does keep the glass in the opening making it nearly impossible for a perpetrator to walk through the damaged opening.
