I found out long ago that one type of photograph would really help another type that I do..it’s weird, but effective. To keep your photography muscles sharp for shooting sports..any kind of sports..football, basketball, triathlons, car racing..then you should just head to your backyard! No kidding..shooting bird pics is the trick. My guess is..getting to take pics of your local fav team..whether that’s DC Everest Football..or the next 5K..it might be awhile. Athletes still have to go to the gym to work out..so photographers have to keep in photog shape too by putting that camera in their hand..getting pics..I mean like daily..get on it.
The other tip for those just starting out in sports photography..think about shooting in RAW format. I’ve seen where most of my pro sports photog gurus had already been doing this in their workflow..but then everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. I shoot RAW now and I do see a difference in the final picture. You have much more control over your post processing if you shoot in RAW. I haven’t ran into issues yet by dealing with bigger photo files..but I did upgrade all my computer stuff late last year..that is key to working with bigger files. The key to keepers though is practice..and if there’s no race, no game, no match to cover right now..there’s a ton of birds flying through your backyard ready to help keep you ready to shoot sports…
