“Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn

“Gone Girl” is about a seemingly perfect wife, Amy, who mysteriously disappears, but evidence at the scene suggests she may have been murdered and the prime suspect is her husband, Nick. Nick seems like a loving husband until secrets about his life are revealed in Amy’s diary. As more secrets are revealed the more you wonder if the story Amy is telling through her diary is completely fabricated.
The thing that I love about this book is how brilliantly the pieces unwind. There are no likable characters in this book. No one to identify with and no one to root for to be honest. At first you feel bad for Nick because you know he didn’t kill his wife. Then you start to feel bad for Amy and how she was treated by Nick, but then there are lies upon lies upon lies to sift through and the most likable character may actually be Desi Collings who is described as Amy’s stalker when he is first introduced to the story.
I read a review that said “I gave this book 3 stars, begrudgingly, because it took me three months to get through.” I did not have that experience at all. The book had me coming back for more everyday. I’m obviously not the only person who liked it because it was good enough to make a movie out of it.
In 2014, “Gone Girl” became a movie starring big name actors like, Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tyler Perry. The movie was pretty good. I always think the book is better, but this movie was good. I thought the casting was great. Ben Affleck was a great Nick and Rosamund Pike did a great job playing the seemingly sweet, innocent rich girl who is incredibly devious and never the victim. Neil Patrick Harris was great as the naive Desi who is blind to Amy’s intentions.
I would say if you’re looking for a good puzzle check this one out. I already told you about “A Simple Favor” in my last blog. This book is a similar story, but better. If you saw the movie and liked it you will really like the book.
