WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The final stages of demolition at the former Verso Paper Mill in Wisconsin Rapids are underway, and Mayor Matt Zacher says the city is also taking calls from businesses interested in redeveloping the site.
Zacher says he’s not ready to discuss specifics, but the city has received offers from companies. “They have put down payments down, or ‘good faith’ money to talk about that building or the 220 acres behind it. But we can’t put the cart before the horse because anything can happen when you are talking about stuff this big.”
He says the site has also gotten a bit dusty these days as crews grind up the concrete. “We can see that happening, and a lot of it has been done. But the stuff with rebar in it they have to be a little more careful [about.]”
They’re also working to take down some of the more structurally sound elements, which include cement and rebar sandwiched around stainless steel. “That does not come down easily,” said Zacher.
The Mayor didn’t provide a timeline for when any development deals could be announced for the site.
Other topics Zacher discussed with WSAU’s Mike Leischner include:
